's about freakin' time! This anti-totalitarian finds himself constantly in arguments with ignorant hipsters about the evil of communism in general and Che in particular. As far as I'm concerned, Che and the rest of them were on the same rock-bottom moral level as the National Socialists - excuse me, Nazis - who, like the Commies, Fought Against Decadent Capitalism for a Better World and a New Humanity, but didn't bother to hide their murderous ideology behind nerdy academic abstractions about "social justice" and "the forces of history."

Hippies love genocide. Oh, believe you me they do. They know spaceship earth can't support all these hu-persons so the least like themselves have to go to make room for open fields and clean meadows.

Yup. Just a few days ago I was reading an online commentary at Tribe.net, and some brain-dead bliss-bunny was whining about how humans are destroying Mother Earth, and how she wanted 90% of humanity to perish to save the planet. (Obviously she and her friends would be among the lucky tenth of survivors, although she didn't explain how they'd deal with all the dead bodies and the collapsed infrastructure of human civilization...)

Last time I checked, 9/10ths of humanity is 5.4 billion people. The combined wars, genocides, plagues, famines, natural disasters, and other assorted die-offs of history amount to a small fraction of this number.

It's funny -- people who will proclaim their "compassion" and "peacefulness" until they're blue in the face, will turn around and advocate a ten-digit omnicide that the worst mass-killers of history would have never dreamed of, nor desired.

When I read that post and thought about the implications, even the usual Hitler/Stalin parallels didn't work any more. The first thought that came to my mind was the story "The Call of Cthulhu" by H.P. Lovecraft, where a cult was trying to call in supernatural powers to destroy all life on earth so that its members could become godlike rulers of a cleared planet.

(In fact, there's a great book about the dark side of Sixties counterculture thinking by former Blondie/Iggy Pop musician Gary [Valentine] Lachman called Turn Off Your Mind, where he uses this very comparison to give a sense of where this kind of ignorant, numbed-out nonsense leads...)

I am sick of seeing white kids wearing them...yes. El Che is a Latin American icon, please leave him to us. You may call him a murderer and you may think the Castro regime is a totalitarian state but fact is were born in Havana today you would have a higher life expectancy and literacy rate than say any US inner city, not to mention a first nation's reserve. He taught a continent to dream of a better tomorrow, despite the fact he was a military idiot and an ideological muddle-head.

If you know anything about history you would see that Cuba was pretty much the US' private whore house before 1959. Needless to go over the 200 plus military interventions which the US has carried out in the hemisphere since 1776 (it is like 230 but I cant recall the exact number). What about the dictators which the US supported in the name of its anti-communist crusade, or the trade system which it hopes to impose upon the hemisphere which will essentially turn people into peons.

Is communism the solution, no. Is capitalism ? Well the record speaks for itself. Is violence a corollary to all forms of political power, well even the enlightened Athenians conquered their neighbours and sent the greatest mind in history to his death, so I would be inclined to say yes it is...no surprise there. Does that mean that we should revile all government ? I leave that up to you.
